4K sells cameras. Whether it improves your footage depends on one variable most spec sheets never mention: how many pixels actually land on the thing you care about.
The number that matters is pixels per foot
Security professionals do not evaluate cameras by total resolution but by pixel density at the subject — how many horizontal pixels cover each foot of the scene at the distance you care about. The rough industry thresholds:
- ~20 px/ft — detection. You can tell a person is there.
- ~40 px/ft — recognition. You can tell it is someone you know.
- ~80 px/ft — identification. You could identify a stranger from the footage.
A 1080P camera spreads 1,920 horizontal pixels across its field of view. Over a 10-foot-wide doorway that is 192 px/ft — far beyond identification. Over a 40-foot driveway it is 48 px/ft — recognition at best. A 4K camera doubles the horizontal pixels to 3,840, so it doubles that figure.
So when is 4K worth it?
Worth it: wide scenes where the subject may be distant — a driveway, a shopfront, a large open-plan room — or where you want the option to crop into a region of the frame after the fact. Digital zoom on a 4K recording is genuinely usable; on 1080P it disintegrates.
Not worth it: a doorway, a cot, a desk, a till, a hallway. At those distances 1080P is already past the identification threshold, and 4K buys nothing you can see.
What 4K costs you
- Storage: roughly 4GB/hour versus 1GB/hour. A 128GB card holds about five days of 1080P or a little over one day of 4K.
- Battery: more sensor readout and far more encoding work. On battery cameras this is the real constraint.
- Night performance: this is the counterintuitive one. Packing four times the pixels onto a sensor of the same physical size makes each pixel smaller, so each gathers less light. A 4K camera can produce a noisier night image than a 1080P camera with the same sensor size. If most of what you care about happens after dark, 1080P with good infrared often beats 4K.
- Bandwidth: 4K live streaming saturates a weak WiFi link and causes the buffering people blame on the camera.
The middle option
1296P — as on the XCAM Ultra — sits between the two. It gives roughly 44% more pixels than 1080P for a modest storage and battery cost, without the night-performance penalty of pushing to 4K on a small sensor.
In short
Buy 4K for wide or distant scenes and for the ability to crop. Buy 1080P for doorways, rooms and anything at close range, and put the savings into better placement, a longer battery or a second camera. Full specs for all eight models are in the XCAM comparison guide.
